Some pet stores will tell you pine and ceder chips are good for bedding, However, some gerbils have respiratory problems. Acid given off by pine and ceder chips destroy cells that line the lungs and trachea making breathing worse for some gerbils.

Aspen is a safe wood also “Carefresh” can be used as a safe bedding, which is good in odor control, is soft and can be burrowed in easily. Like most desert animals gerbils like sand baths, so put some sand in their cages but, not to much to create clouds of dust. A little shredded paper is good and gerbils will even shred it themselves just for fun!
